Pay Per Click refers to the paid placement of advertisements on various search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN and AOL. The name of the game is bidding. You create an advertisement for a product or service offered on your site. You then open an account with the search engine of your choice, upload the advertisement and bid for placement. Depending on the search engine, your ad will appear anywhere from immediately to a few days later.

While pay per click sounds like a perfect solution for getting traffic, there are serious drawbacks. You can have your marketing budget wiped out if you don’t understand the following.

Initially, you have to keep a close eye on your return on investment. You have a serious problem if you spend $10,000 on pay per click advertising and produce $5,000 in revenues. While this may sound obvious, most people pursuing pay per click have no clue regarding their return on investment. They get enamored with the volume of hits and go broke without even realizing it. Welcome to the danger of pay per click.

A second problem with pay per click is something known as click fraud.  Click fraud is the nasty little secret none of the search engines want to talk about. Click fraud occurs when someone clicks your advertisement over and over with no intention of buying. They could be a competitor or just a jerk. Really nasty competitors will actually use a program called a clickbot that will actually sit and click your ads over and over until you run out of cash. The searches attempt to filter out click fraud, but few believe they make much effort since they profit from the clicks.
